Sandwich Dinners to the Rescue

By Lori Powell

Life has been so super busy these days. I mean, crazy busy to the point that I have not read a book that wasn’t food-related, nor have I had time to go to the movies.

Actually, forget about recreational activities. I barely have had time to pay my bills or keep up personal hygiene, such as getting the laundry done or taking a long bath....

Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as all that! I somehow stumble into the shower each morning and muster up a respectable-looking outfit. At least I have not noticed any snickering or laughter when I walk by. Or maybe I’m just too tired to notice. So at least I am managing for now.

Crispy Bacon Pancakes – My New Craving

By Lori Powell

I love a leisurely breakfast on the weekends and my favorite is Saturday brunch. After working all week, it’s such a luxurious treat to stay in bed one hour longer and to lounge around in my PJs after that.

I have to admit I am not such a big breakfast eater during the week and most days, I have a homemade juice of whatever fruits and veggies are in the fridge and/or a hard-boiled egg. However on the weekend, my idea of a good, balanced breakfast is a hit of sweet and savory.

My Life in Recipes

By Marilyn Hunter

While searching through my recipe box the other day, it occurred to me that this little wooden box is a metaphor of my life. Every well-worn recipe tells a story, a snapshot of a particular time in my life – times when I’ve been up and times when I’ve been down.

There are recipes for celebrations (my favorite chocolate cake) and recipes for difficult times when I craved comfort food (mac ‘n’ cheese and pot pie). I can think of a recipe that has accompanied almost every milestone. These recipes tell my life story, and if a picture is worth a thousand words, then a recipe must be worth a million.

Breakfast After a Morning of Antiquing

By Lori Powell

Oh yes, another weekend… except this is the first time I ventured out to have some fun which did not include a stop at a Home Depot, Lowe’s or the hardware store.

Ohhh, the lovely search and find of special objects and lure of antique shops and garage sales! Unfortunately Pennsylvania has plenty of them to satisfy my obsession of finding treasures amongst other people’s castaways. And yes, find I did…some old copper pots….old silverware and some pictures for the walls.

I am a huge fan of “Antiques Road Show,” except I am never home when the darned program is airing. Like the other folks clasping their treasures on the show, I am convinced I have a Picasso amongst my finds, except I still haven’t figured out which one has disguised itself as just an ordinary Joe!

Childhood Ambition

By Andrew Hunter

When I was a child, I loved to scramble eggs. My family said my eggs were the best they ever had. When people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer was always a high-pitched, “Chef!” And while I rebelled against that certainty for a short stint in my 20’s, my destiny was set early in life.

So it was no surprise to anyone when my cousin Chipper and I, at the ripe old age of 10, decided to open a restaurant called “Andrewshka’s.” We would only serve potatoes… in all their glorious fried forms. I still remember standing together in the backyard by my dad’s grill shaking hands on our business venture.
