Super Bowl Sunday Guacamole

The countdown to the Super Bowl has officially started. My brother-in-law, Eddie, who is a 5th generation Texan, is staying home through the weekend to avoid the crazy crowds. He typically also stays away from the kitchen, but on this most sacred game day, Eddie ties on his annual apron strings and makes his signature guacamole.

He’s not alone in his love for avocados, though he calls them “gator pears.” Did you know that 53.5 million pounds of avocados will be consumed on Super Bowl Sunday? That’s nearly 6 ounces for every man, woman and child in the United States. It’s the avocado industry’s biggest day of the year. That said, it’s time to talk guacamole.

In our house, Ben and Nick are guacamole purists. They think I add too many goodies to my version and prefer their avocados smashed with just a hint of lime and sea salt. So we take them to Loteria, the corner Mexican joint, for their favorite version. Marilyn and I like to add a few dashes of hot sauce and extras to ours.

Basic Guacamole 
4 ripe avocados
Juice of 1 lime
Sea salt to taste

Smash the avocado and season with the lime and sea salt.

Customize it with your signature extras:
½ cup chopped white onion
2 tomatoes, seeded and diced
1 to 2 cloves minced garlic
1 to 2 teaspoons minced fresh jalapeno or Serrano pepper
1 to 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro

So whether you’re rooting for the Steelers or the Packers, one thing’s for sure, Guacamole is delicious…and seeing Eddie in an apron is priceless.

Without a doubt this has become one of my favorite treats. As a Texan now of 48 years in the DFW area, I can only hope that the area will overcome the snow and ice that we have had here over the last three days. Hopefully, bowl day will render the proper returns to all those who have invested their time and money, for the first great Superbowl for the DFW area of Texas.

add a half a red chilli for that hum of heat! Also by adding the smalllest amount of lemon juice, it should help to keep the guacamole from turning that strange brown color.

Make sure you use ripe avocados soft to the touch. Season a little at a time until it tastes just right. Best of luck but you can't go wrong. Cheers!

if you want smokey flavour without heat - ancho powder will work.

I like to make pancakes and add cocoa and chipotle powder to the batter

this is a great post. we can never prepare too much for guacamole. your ingredients are almost identical to mine. i find the key is the cilantro. fresh cilantro is essential.

We don't have super bowl sunday here but its fame for advertisements has spread far and wide or at least to my course in publishing. Guacamole seems like such a staple to those in America. In Australia, food of hispanic origin is scarce and little known about but as your recipe is so simple, I think I will give it a go!

I've never seen guacamole in Mexico that doesn't have diced onion, tomato, and cilantro...so don't feel badly about adding your extras!

I agree...it's important that the avocados be soft to the touch, otherwise they won't mash and they won't have that great flavor.

You can always make up two different kinds for variety. I usually do two versions: with and without cilantro, because there are always people who don't like it.
