Our Best Cooking Tips and Tricks

Special Fork is on summer hiatus from August 5 through Labor Day. Each Monday, while we’re on vacation, I’ll present another facet of Special Fork and highlight some features you might have missed.

A sensible way to learn to cook is to just do it, one simple recipe at a time. By following instructions in a recipe, you’re rewarded with something good to eat, and you’ll begin to learn cooking techniques along the way.

After more than three years of blogging, Monday through Friday, Special Fork bloggers have produced a rich collection of recipes, all taking no more than 30 minutes of prep time. And, embedded in many of the blog posts, are useful cooking tips and tricks that I am highlighting for you today.

In Tips & Tricks, a tab on our conventional website, I’ve gathered our blog posts that are particularly instructive, grouped under specific topics such as, “Tips on Tools,” “Presentation Techniques,” and “Party & Entertaining Ideas.” Scroll through the extensive list to find a topic that you’d like to learn more about.

On Pinterest, I’ve collected our videos that teach more tips and tricks on a board called, How-to Tutorials. On this board, you’ll find links to a variety video demos, from how to cut a pineapple, to how to make your own sushi, how to zest citrus fruits, how to seed a pomegranate, how to make crème fraîche, how to make wonton cups…and more.

And in case you didn’t know it, Special Fork consists of three sites:

  • www.m.specialfork.com is our mobile site for smartphones. On this site you get our weekly blogs optimized for your iPhone, Android phone or Blackberry, and have access to our extensive searchable database of recipes. This is where you can start a free account to create your own recipe box and shopping lists.
  • We also post to www.specialforkblog.com, which is a site exclusively of our blog posts.
  • www.about.specialfork.com is our conventional site to visit via your computer. Here you’ll find our blog posts, access to our database of recipes and additional tabs of information, including Tips & Tricks.

I usually make tomato rice using pressure cooker.Recently my friend Shalini told me to try in electric rice cooker without using a kadai and she shared her recipe too. I love tomato rice only when it is fully packed with garam masalas.For Sendhil, it should be with least spices.So i tried Shalini’s recipe which has very less spices with a south Indian touch.He loved it a lot.I have made it many times so far.It comes out very well. http://ricecooker-hq.com/ ricecooker4u@gmail.com
